TMSA hosted another successful 2012 Holiday Bazaar at UNC Hospital.
Thousands of dollars were raised and will be donated back to the area hospitals and health-non profits.

If you are interested in volunteering for the bazaar next year, helping TMSA bake cookies, set up booths for vendors, volunteer to sell cookies the day of, or all of the above, please let us know!

From East (Raleigh/Durham)
From I-40, take exit 273 towards Chapel Hill. Proceed approximately two miles. Turn left onto Barbee Chapel Rd. (Citgo gas station on the corner) which is the first stoplight after the “Welcome to Chapel Hill” sign on the right. Proceed ½ mile and turn right at the sign into The Farm. This is 1 Alice Ingram Circle.

Parking
Parking areas are found on the right side of the drive. There is a large lot behind the picnic shelters on the right hand side of the drive and another lot near the hard tennis courts. Do not park in the lot on the left side of the drive near the main office/tennis shop. This lot is reserved for tennis players.

Education Session - Financial Planning

We recently held another successful Education Session for our Alliance members. Bo White and Ted Wight of Martin\Wight & Company, LLC was kind enough to host the event and provide a wonderful dinner. Martin\Wight & Company is a physician-only financial planning firm based in Baltimore. They provide comprehensive financial planning services and currently serve over 3,000 physicians.

Bo and Ted shared their knowledge and expertise on the financial planning for physicians, in particular what we should be thinking about during the medical training years. The event was held in a private dining room at the Millennium Hotel in Durham and we had 16 people in attendance. Thank you to everyone who attended and a special thank you to Bo and Ted.

Successful Holiday Bazaar

Thanks to TMSA Volunteers and shoppers, we held a successful Holiday Bazaar at UNC Hospital December 8th. Proceeds from this event will be used to support the Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House and other community based organizations. Thanks to everyone who helped make this philanthropic event our biggest fundraiser to date!

Holiday Bazaar Volunteers Needed

This year's holiday bazaar will be held on Wednesday, December 8th. This is our biggest event of the year and there are lots of opportunities to help out.!

TMSA needs volunteers to help with the following:

-Baking Cookies on the 5th or 6th of December (recipes will be shared!)
-Selling Cookies/helping vendors on Wednesday the 8th at the UNC Hospital. These will be 2 hours shifts between 8am and 5pm.
-Setting up tables and chairs for vendors on Tuesday the 7th around 5pm at UNC Hospital
-Breaking down tables and chairs from 5-7pm on Wednesday the 8th.

This is a fun event with lots of opportunities and it's a good excuse to work and knock out some holiday shopping. There are some great local crafts and national reps selling this year: Discovery Toys, Tupperware, hand thrown pottery, candles, and Stella Dot Jewelry, to name a few. The funds raised will be donated back to local hospitals!

Education Session - Recruiting

We recently held another successful Education Session for our Alliance members. Amanda Marshall, Director of Physician Recruiting at Assurgent Medical Solutions, shared her knowledge and expertise on the recruiting lifecycle for Physicians. The event was held at Bocci Trattoria and Pizzeria and we had 13 people in attendance. The session provided valuable information on best practices for job searching as well as what to expect during the recruiting process. Also, thank you to TMSA members who helped prepare and serve a meal last month at the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill. Over forty people were served a home cooked meal prepared by TMSA members. Thank you for your time and generosity to give back to the community!

Amanda Marshall, Director of Physician Recruitment at Assurgent Medical Solutions, will join us to offer her thoughts on the recruitment process. Topics covered will include when to start the job search, best practices for finding jobs, private practice vs. academic practice, negotiating contracts, etc.
While Assurgent Medical Solutions is a physician recruitment firm, Amanda will be here to share her personal knowledge and expertise on the recruitment process and what she has learned working with physicians during their job searches over the years. Whether you are in your first or last year of residency/fellowship or anywhere in between, don't miss it!

Philanthropy Project: Ronald McDonald House of CH

Please join us in cooking dinner for the families staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Chapel Hill on Sunday, 9/19 at 5pm. We have a great time and the families are very appreciative of a home cooked meal. You can sign up for a lasagna, salad, garlic bread, or a dessert to bring or feel free to drop off with an attending TMSA member before hand if you can't make it Sunday night. If you have not been sent the evite, contact the general TMSA email for more information. Please prepare all food in disposable containers so leftovers can be left with the families there to enjoy. We ask that you arrive at 5pm to help prepare and set up for dinner which is served at 6pm. we will be cooking for about 40 people.

Hello fellow TMSA friends,
As many of you know, my husband and I recently returned from Ethiopia where we adopted our precious four-month old son, Judah. Our trip was wonderful and life-changing. I just wanted to send a huge THANK YOU to everyone who helped pitch in for items for the orphanages in Ethiopia. Our adoption agency representatives were so very grateful...you should have seen the smiles on their faces when they went through the 50+ lb. suitcase of items just for them and the beautiful children! Thank you for sending love all the way across the globe...you have truly helped make a difference and we are very appreciative.

Thank you to everyone for a great group effort in making this year's holiday bazaar a huge success. With over 50 vendors this year, things went remarkably smooth! Thank you to the bakers, the babysitters, the recipe givers, the recipe printer, the advertising/flier/poster printer, the heavy lifters, the sales crew, the setter uppers, the breaker downers, and the cheerleaders - we could not have done it without all of you. Special thanks to Kim Runkle's husband Daniel who came in on Tuesday to set up and Wednesday to break down on his vacation time - I am sure the hospital is the last place a resident wants to spend his vacation days!
We are getting great compliments and feed back from the vendors as well as those of you who worked yesterday that will help make next year's event even smoother!

We had a couple dozen cookies left over that were delivered to The Ronald McDonald House and were greatly appreciated. Those at play group on Friday will get some too!

Keep your eyes and taste buds open this year for any new recipes that will make for a good addition to next year's boxes. Looks like we made over $4000 this year.

Our Holiday Party was a huge success. We had approximately 40 people attend and we enjoyed wonderful food and great company. We also had a big basket full of unwrapped toys to donate to Toys for Tots this Holiday season. Thanks to everyone who helped make this such a successful social event.

AMA Alliance Southern Regional Conference

The AMA Alliance Southern Regional Conference is in Raleigh January 29-30. Go to www.ncmsalliance.org and you'll see the information and agenda.

This is a great opportunity to take advantage of some of the Alliance's expertise in our own backyard! The meeting kicks off on Friday afternoon and continues through Saturday to better accommodate working members. And, for physicians-in-training, the registration is pretty reasonable ($60) and you don't even need to stay overnight!

As most of you know, our TMSA organization includes spouses of physicians in training in the Triangle area (Duke and UNC). The larger organization, NCMSA, is based in Raliegh and includes spouses of physicians who have completed their medical training. Our organization is listed on their website and a few of our board members are members of this Alliance as well as the National AMA Alliance. Our state Alliance, NCMSA wanted us to share this special event they are hosting.

Pumpkin Patch: October 18th 4-6 PM

We are heading to the pumpkin patch (Gaynard Hill Farm) on Sunday October 18th from 4-6 PM(note the change of date). We have a group reservation, so we will be sending out an Evite soon. They have given us a group rate of $10 per person (children 2 and under are FREE).
You get to pick your own pumpkin for free and there is tons to do on the farm. We get to feed the goats, go on a hayride, run through a corn maze and see the cows. We will plan on meeting outside the entrance of the farm at the picnic tables at 4 and head inside for all of the fun. After we all finish exploring on the farm and pick out our pumpkins, we can then head back to the picnic tables to carve our pumpkins (so bring your pumpkin carving supplies along)! We might even have an actual pumpkin carving contest with a grand prize- so bring along your creativity!

PLEASE mark your calendars for our Annual Holiday Bazaar Benefitting the UNC Children's Hospital.
It will be held in the UNC Hospital lobby Wednesday, December 9th. This is an all-day event. We will also need help setting up tables on Tuesday evening, December 8th.

MESSAGE FROM THE LEADERSHIP BOARD
Hi Everyone! We hope you are all doing well! It is hard to believe that Spring is here! As we have mentioned in the last few newsletters, we have several people that will be leaving at the end of this year and there will be leadership board positions opening up. We ask that you consider increasing your participation in the Auxiliary by taking on one of these positions. This organization can only survive with your support. We need you!

Our All-Members Meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 21st to discuss next year’s plans for the Auxiliary. We are considering some big changes, so plan to attend! Be on the lookout for email/evite information about the meeting - we will meet at 7pm at Michelle Koln's house in Chapel Hill. Dinner will be provided. We look forward to seeing everyone!
